I remember when Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them and Quidditch Through the Ages first came out – Darling JK released them for Comic Relief. They were two teeny pamphlet sized books, with witty annotations in the margins – don’t get me wrong, they were fun, but when I heard the film was being done, the words “cash cow” came in to my head.
Somehow the pieces managed to fit together; Eddie Redmayne was cast, it was set in New York with a much darker overall message (that the segmentation of people based on a number of factors is always going to end badly) and some crazy special effects. I LOVED IT.
I saw it in the cinema twice, and I’ve seen it again since it’s been on DVD – it’s a gorgeous little addition to the Harry Potter universe. Plus, it’s about time a Hufflepuff got some real focus.
